About Us
Who Are We?
Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington is a volunteer driven, incorporated, non-profit organization committed to improving the state of the environment. An accredited coordinator of Earth Day Canada, since 1996 we have hosted forums for environmental education and positive action. We build local environmental leaders at schools and within the community in order to create positive environmental change.
Vision
An aware and environmentally responsible community which embraces sustainable environmental values, seeks solutions and takes positive action.
Mission
To improve the state of the environment by educating youth and the community on a wide range of environmental issues; inspiring them with role models and success stories; and empowering them to take action at home, at school, in the community and beyond by providing forums offering action and ideas for both local and global solutions.
Mandate
- To create awareness about existing and new environmental solutions to address a wide range of environmental issues.
- To encourage citizens to take positive action to improve the quality of their local environment.
- To provide accessible programs and events aimed at educating and involving community members in effective environmental management.
- To promote the on-going work of local environmental organizations.
- To make national expertise available at the local level, encouraging citizen action and consideration of the global environment.

Dr. Jack Vallentyne
J. R. "Jack" Vallentyne, Earth Day Hamilton's first Chair, was instrumental in incorporating Earth Day Hamilton, conceptualizing our current Eco-Festival, and securing his former scientist colleague, Dr. David Suzuki, as our keynote speaker in 2003. Jack, too, was a presenter at several Eco-Festivals over the years.
Jack had an illustrious career including assembling an international team of scientists, including David Schindler, to focus on this task. Jack was largely responsible for establishing a special research facility called the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), where small, secluded lakes could be experimentally fertilized to investigate the interactions of nutrients and algae.
Jack published several books including The Algal Bowl (1974 - an update of this book, by Jack and David Schindler, was completed just before Jack's passing) He also served for many years as senior Canadian scientist for the International Joint Commission as well as working at Canada Centre for Inland Waters.
Jack's alter persona was Johnny Biosphere, attending public events, given talks to both students and conventions all over the world while wearing a safari suit and carrying a globe on his back. His lifetime of commitment to the environment which began in his early years hiking and canoeing in the Grand River area never ceased, and this persona was Jack's way of raising awareness to the fact that we humans carry responsibility for the well-being of our planet on our shoulders.
