Tree Planting

14,000 trees planted and counting!

Since 1997, our community tree plantings have helped to:
  • remediate natural areas suffering from man-made degradation
  • combat global warming (sequestering carbon to reduce the build-up of atmospheric carbon dioxide)
  • provide a tree canopy
  • anchor and maintain the soil and water base
  • maintain biological diversity
  • cooling from sun's rays and natural beauty

Earth Day Hamilton Tree Planting Festival

THANKS TO ALL WHO CAME OUT AND SUPPORTED THIS YEAR'S EVENT - IT WAS AMAZING.  1,300 trees were planted, and 700 people attended.  This was so much more than planting - it's an eco-fair, an eco-festival, and an eco-concert.

Location: Churchill Park, Westdale, at the Aviary (details on location and parking - below).  This free and fun tree planting festival includes interactive exhibits, horse-drawn wagon rides into Westdale Village, wonderful line-up of musicians, drum circle, organic farm booths, birds of prey show with Mountsberg Conservation, plus the Aviary, food, and fun family activities. Our planting partners are the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) and the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC).

Trees were reserved for contributing Earth Day Walk participants and school groups, businesses and community groups that register their involvement through our GO GREEN CHALLENGE program.

Join our Earth Day Walk in support of environmental education, which will have its end destination at our Tree Planting Event!

Directions:
The tree planting festival is located at the Aviary in Churchill Park in Westdale.  The exact address (check it out on Google Maps or Mapquest) is 85 Oak Knoll.  Westdale's streets are patterned after a hub, rather than on a grid.  The simplest route is taking Paisley, going North to the very end and then turning right onto Oak Knoll. (please click on map to enlarge).  However street parking is limited so please see our parking zones & free shuttles below.

Parking & Shuttles:

Think of the environment - consider taking public transit, bikes, shuttles, or car pooling.

We've arranged for parking at George R. Allan School nearby and there is side street parking, however consider parking in one of our parking depots and then hop aboard the City Replica Trolley shuttling you free to the site and back during the event for your parking convenience.

The Parking Depots are:

► Princess Point (at the foot of Longwood Rd. where our former planting site was located). 2 city replica trolley buses servicing this site

► Bayfront Park (off Bay St. N).  This site is much further away and mostly used by our Walk participants.  2 city replica trolleys servicing this site

Or take public transit into Westdale Village and then hop aboard our old fashioned shuttle - the Horse & Wagon to take you over to the park a few blocks away. Pick up spot is in front of My Dog Joe's in the Westdale Theatre block.

We do year-round planting through our Native Species Tree Planting Program

Earth Day Hamilton-Burlington plants mature, native species trees at schools, businesses or institutions through a sponsorship program. A tree can also be won through our GoGreen Challenge. Visit GO GREEN CHALLENGE to see how this works. Over three years, we have planted 36 mature trees across Hamilton.
